Mini-blog: Make Your Favourite Treats at Home

When it comes to eating well, small swaps can make a big difference — especially when they’re quick, budget-friendly, and use simple ingredients. Many shop-bought snacks are loaded with added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. By making a few favourites at home, you get full control over what goes in, and you can boost the nutrition while keeping the taste you love.

Here are three easy, wholesome recipes you can whip up in minutes. Bonus points, they all work as good gifts if you're visiting a friend.

Chia Seed Jam

A naturally sweet, fibre-rich spread perfect for toast, yoghurt, or porridge.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen berries (e.g. blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)

  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or honey

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds

Method

  1. Heat berries in a small saucepan over low-medium heat until soft. Mash slightly.

  2. Stir in maple syrup/honey and chia seeds.

  3. Simmer for 5 minutes, then cool. Store in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Microwave Potato Crisps

Crisp, savoury, and far less oily than packet chips.

Ingredients

  • 1 large potato, washed

  • Olive oil spray

  • Sea salt

Method

  1. Slice potato thinly (use a mandolin if you have one).

  2. Arrange slices on a microwave-safe plate in a single layer. Lightly spray with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.

  3. Microwave on high for 3–5 minutes, turning once, until golden and crisp.

Chocolate-Dipped Dried Fruit

A naturally sweet treat with antioxidants from dark chocolate. But it's just like having chocolate! Yes, of course, but the added fibre of the fruit helps you feel more satisfied, and is also good for the gut.

ree

Ingredients

  • 100g good-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more)

  • Fresh fruit (apples, apricots, figs, bananas - whatever you prefer)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to the lowest setting, typically around 60-93°C.

  2. Slice the fruit thinly and evenly, then arrange the pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. Bake for several hours, flipping the fruit occasionally, until it is pliable but no longer juicy.

  4. Cool completely before melting dark chocolate in microwave (30 second bursts), and dipping each fruit piece in halfway.

For a time saver option - just buy the dried fruit you like, and melt/dip the chocolate!

By swapping packaged snacks for these homemade versions, you’ll save money, reduce additives, and enjoy fresh, nourishing flavours — with the satisfaction of having made them yourself.
